Introduction
What began as an impromptu workshop for university interns has blossomed into a multifaceted partnership that spans teaching, innovation, and collaborative research. Over the past two years, Evolutioned has worked alongside the University of Canberra to create meaningful connections between industry expertise and academic learning, resulting in better-prepared graduates and innovative solutions to complex challenges.
The Genesis: From Workshop to Classroom
The partnership between Evolutioned and the University of Canberra began organically before Evolutioned was even formally established. The founding team was conducting freelance work that involved UC students completing their internships. After running several workshops focused on workplace dynamics, self-awareness and team collaboration, they witnessed a profound impact on the participating students.
This early success caught the attention of a UC professor who recognised the value of bringing this real-world perspective into the classroom. As conversations continued and Evolutioned was officially founded, the team was invited to deliver a guest lecture for the “Technology Engineering and Management” subject in UC’s Network and Software Engineering degree.
“We were able to draw on our combined expertise across ICT management, lean and agile software development, and our deep knowledge of leadership and organisational development,” explains Evolutioned’s co-founder and CEO, Joel Madden. “The students connected with our practical approach and industry experience.”
From Guest Lecturers to Curriculum Designers
The positive reception to these initial lectures led to an extraordinary opportunity: Evolutioned was engaged to deliver the entire “Technology Engineering and Management” unit for the following semester. This wasn’t simply a matter of presenting prepared material—the team completely reimagined the unit, developing new lectures, tutorials, and assessments that brought contemporary industry practices directly into the classroom.
This industry-led approach to learning offered students an experience that was both cohesive and challenging. With Evolutioned handling all aspects of the unit—from curriculum design to delivery and assessment—students benefited from a seamless educational experience that maintained high standards throughout.
“Students appreciated our recent, ‘full-stack’ experience in everything we were teaching,” Joel says. “Because we were writing, teaching and assessing the unit, we had incredible line of sight and understanding of all aspects. This challenged students because there was no wriggle room to fudge their way through—we knew our content intimately because we had often created it within a week or two of teaching it.”
The curriculum featured authentic scenarios of agile and lean practices, team management challenges, and organisational dynamics rarely captured in textbooks. This real-world focus prepared students for situations they would likely encounter in their careers, equipping them with practical techniques and approaches rather than just theoretical knowledge.
Students particularly valued learning about:

- Navigating complex organisational politics and dynamics
- Applying agile methodologies in constrained environments
- Translating technical knowledge into business value
Expanding Horizons: Innovation Central Canberra
While the teaching arrangement was successful, both Evolutioned and UC recognised it wasn’t sustainable as a long-term model. However, the connections established through this collaboration opened doors to new opportunities, particularly with Innovation Central Canberra (ICC)—a collaborative initiative between Cisco and UC, and part of the National Industry Innovation Network across Australia.
ICC serves as a nexus for academic-industry collaboration, making it a natural fit for Evolutioned’s expertise. Through this new channel, Evolutioned began supporting digital industry projects and addressing a critical gap they had observed: many students struggled with the transition from academic projects to industry engagement.
This insight led to Evolutioned’s involvement in ICC’s flagship internship program, where they now teach essential professional skills that aren’t typically covered in technical degrees: human relationships, client-consultant dynamics, lean agile delivery, low-documentation governance, and managing expectations, scope and quality within tight timeframes.
“We talk to students naturally and in a relaxed way, helping them realise that success in their internships depends as much on managing relationships as it does on delivering technical work,” explains Joel. “If you don’t get the relationship working and information flowing, the work will suffer.”
The transformation in students has been remarkable. All kinds of students have gained significant confidence; those experiencing workplace conflicts have learned to address issues constructively; and students with failing projects have developed the skills to diagnose problems and salvage valuable learnings for themselves and their clients.
Erin Stacey, ICC Director puts it this way: “Our goal is to create a seamless experience between students, their learning, and industry readiness. The internship experience we are now offering in partnership with Evolutioned gives industry the confidence that our graduates are prepared for the modern, dynamic and changing workplace of the future.”
Collaboration in Innovation
The partnership has continued to evolve through direct collaboration on innovation projects. Evolutioned has sponsored internship teams to work on cutting-edge technology initiatives, including an AI coaching tool for Microsoft Teams calls and early-stage development of AImbience.ai—Evolutioned’s program and project management AI solution.
These projects have provided students with valuable experience working on commercial AI applications while giving Evolutioned access to fresh perspectives and talent.
A Relationship Built on Trust
The strength of the partnership is perhaps best exemplified by the joint application for a Cooperative Research Centres Projects (CRC-P) grant—a significant undertaking that demonstrates the trust and rapport built between Evolutioned and UC over a relatively short time. This collaborative application focused on advancing Evolutioned’s AImbience solution, with contributions from both organisations.
Most recently, Evolutioned and UC have partnered to develop and market an “AI Advantage” short course, designed to transform participants from curious AI users to confident experts in just one day. The organisations also co-presented a paper titled “A New Benchmark for WIL” at the Australian Collaborative Education Network’s Work Integrated Learning conference, further cementing their shared commitment to excellence in industry-education partnerships.
Mutual Benefits and Lasting Impact
Over the course of two years, Evolutioned has worked with 80 students across 20 projects and delivered 10 workshops. But the impact goes beyond numbers.
The partnership has created significant value for both organisations:

- For Evolutioned: Valuable connections to academic research, subject matter experts, and expanded professional networks

When asked what had best prepared them for their internships throughout their entire university experience, one student’s answer was unequivocal: “Nothing as much as the Evolutioned workshops.”
The partnership has also reinforced Evolutioned’s reputation as an authentic, pragmatic, and value-focused partner—qualities that resonate in all their professional relationships.
Looking Forward
As the relationship continues to evolve, both organisations are exploring new grant and research opportunities while building on their established foundation of trust and shared purpose. Current and future initiatives include:
- Delivering the “AI Advantage” short course to help professionals rapidly develop AI expertise
- Identifying new research collaboration opportunities
- Expanding internship program involvement
- Exploring additional funding opportunities through grants and industry partnerships
Through this ongoing collaboration, Evolutioned and the University of Canberra are demonstrating how the gap between industry and academia can be bridged to create better outcomes for students, organisations, and the broader community.
